Dornenkaefig: Idike (Little Briar Rose/Sleeping Beauty)

Post by Lethe »

I've been working on a small year-end project before I plunge into five weeks of studying for finals. :music2: :sob: I thought this was finally a subject for a one page shrine since the character's story takes place within one chapter, but... it turned into a multi-page shrine anyway. I'm quite fond of this shrine, as I already wanted to make a small tribute to this subject ten years (!!) ago - it's one of the fanlistings I had when I briefly tried my hand at them lol.

The character is from a fairy tale retelling by Kaori Yuki - Grimms' Little Briar Rose, which you may know as Sleeping Beauty. Dornenkaefig is German for "Cage of Thorns". I hope it appeals to the fairy tale lovers among you. <3

Feedback, as always, is welcome.

I'm unfamiliar with this (I somehow missed this Kaori Yuki series!), but it sounds really intriguing and I'm putting it on my TBR list, even with your criticism of the second half. So I'm going to avoid the more in-depth content because of spoilers and just say that I love the layout, especially the navigation. It works really well. :)

(And ugh, I feel you on the studying. </3)

@Emma: It hasn't been published in English, which may explain why you haven't come across it! Thanks for checking it out, and I hope that you'll enjoy it when you give the series a try. :D I remember, when I first read the first volume ten years ago, I was ecstatic. LOL And so so so wished for the series to be continued. Most of my shrine is about the first volume, partly about the second one, so if you don't feel like continuing the series after that, the shrine can still be enjoyed cough cough. XD

@Robin: Thank you! :D Yesssssss it feels so amazing to (be able to) grant your younger self these wishes...!! It's a very precious feeling.

Read through the site, and WOW! This certainly doesn't feel like a "minor character shrine," because it's very well-fleshed-out and analyzed. The navigation being at the bottom of the page is a nice touch, too--it doesn't interfere with the initial impression of the site. (My only problem was that I would get to the bottom of a long page and forget which link I needed to click on next...probably operator error, though, XD)

Seriously, though, another awesome site! :D

This is awesome! I like seeing shrines based on fairy tales, there are so many versions and it's fun to discover new ones. I took an interest in Sleeping Beauty's story after playing Child of Light and more so with the interesting interpretation in Tales of Hearts. Your site is very informative! :D

@Robin: Haha thanks so much for reading the shrine and for the praise!! <3 <3 As for the navigation, I think my tip for you is to look at your address bar to see where you are, since in the majority of cases, navigation points and address match up. XD <3

@Mikari: Thank you, Mikari! Yeah, I love comparing different versions of myths and fairy tales - or hunting down similar fairy tales and THEN comparing their elements, which I had considered doing for this too. But I didn't want it to get too out of hand, plus I'm already doing something similar when comparing the bride candidates across different retellings in the series (which was super fun). I haven't played Tales of Hearts, but I love that you connect Sleeping Beauty with Child of Light! *O*

I linked the scanlation group for the series on the index page precisely because of that haha. XD It's out of print in German too... I disliked volume 3 so much that I didn't buy it back then, so now I'll forever have an incomplete collection unless I find the thing cheap somewhere. LOL

This is such a lovely site! I wasn't familiar with the manga, but looked up the chapter Idike's from and read it to get a baseline, and it made it a really enjoyable read. I really like the way you've put it together -- the design is compact and simple, directing the focus to be on the content, and the navigation is very straightforward.

The way you present the material is easy to read, and like Robin I'm surprised you wrote so much about a character like this! I particularly enjoyed the fairy tale page and the comparisons of the original tale; it's been many years since I read the Grimm brothers story, so my memories of Sleeping Beauty are mostly from the Disney movie, haha.

Really, this is a great example of a small tribute -- I can see why it didn't fit on one page, but it works really well at the size you have. Lovely work!

I already told you on Skype, but I love the whole look of this shrine, and how you present the pages, keeping in mind that it's based on a fairy tale. I'm not familiar with the subject, either, but I am familiar with Sleeping Beauty, and I loved reading that page and the Once Upon a Time page to see how they compare.

Really wonderful work on this shrine, Lethe! You keep raising the standard for shrines! /goes to work on his own shrine based on a fairy tale (Wings), lol
