Currently watching....?
Re: Currently watching....?
Looks cutesy but it has a somewhat serious storyline beneath? Looks interesting, I want to watch that one too and it's not too long.
Re: Currently watching....?
It has an extremely dark storyline lurking beneath those disarming character designs. And it's only a 1-cour show, so it's not a huge time investment. I'd recommend it if you're interested in a different take on core magical girl concepts.Mikari wrote:Looks cutesy but it has a somewhat serious storyline beneath? I'll get stuck with subs won't I? D: Let's see if I eventually beat my dislike for reading... or find a program that can actually read subs for me.... but if it's the same voice I won't be able to multitask anyway. -.- I am curious though.Shiori wrote:It has an extremely dark storyline lurking beneath those disarming character designs. Madoka was supposed to get an English dub, so you could probably try to watch that. The voices seemed pretty decent from what I recall.
The series is okay. It has enough entertainment value to keep your attention span until the last episode. I personally think it's overrated on whole. As they say, different strokes! The fanboyism around it was pretty nauseating around the time it aired, though (surprise, surprise). I haven't bothered to see how it is now.

Yeah Madoka did receive an English-language dub, so you can probably track that down if you don't want just subs. It's a fairly standard English track, but it does the job.Juhi wrote:Madoka was supposed to get an English dub, so you could probably try to watch that. Fan flailing is kind of expected with whatever SHAFT craps out. They know how to appeal to otaku and they're happy to capitalise on this. I don't think Madoka is the big "deconstruction of the magical girl genre" that others seem to think it is, but it's certainly a cut above most other SHAFT shows. Not that that's saying a lot, but still -- it's decent.

I remember my fiance's older brother rambling on about how he loved that show. I never gave it a shot considering our tastes vary so much. Besides, I really love magical girl shows so I don't have any interest in seeing one that is trying to make it more mature or dark. At least, this is what it sounded like when he was describing it to us.
Re: Currently watching....?
A lot of classic magical girl series are quite dark in nature. Minky Momo, for example, took some very dark and twisted turns and it had a very family friendly time slot lol. Madoka, I would argue, is a title worth seeing for those interested in the further exploration of key mahoujo elements, in addition to a glimpse at the darker side of the fan consumption of such products. As I said above, SHAFT absolutely knows their otaku audience and with Madoka they managed to twist that just a tad (I feel the show comments considerably on its intended audience, just as it comments on the mahoujo genre). I don't think the title is the "magical girl Evangelion" as some have said (I actually like the deconstructionist elements in Okusama wa Mahou Shoujo a lot more, for example). It does, however, take the darkness and exploitation that often goes unmentioned in other series and, y'know, let's us take a good look-see. If that's your thing, then that's your thing. If not, well, that's cool too.Destinie wrote:I remember my fiance's older brother rambling on about how he loved that show. I never gave it a shot considering our tastes vary so much. I have to say as someone who has been watching magical girl titles for 20-ish years, I'm glad I watched the show. It's not something I'm gagging to own in all its LE glory, but it did give me a few things to mull over as a fan of the genre. That, I feel, was worth a half-dozen episode investment. Lord knows I've watched a lot worse for a lot less lol.
Re: Currently watching....?
